I wish I was six again...

I have been in my grade one class now for nearly a month.  They really make me laugh.  As John Mayer says, "I wish I were six again".

I have decided that grade ones are all about playdough and hugging.  You make them playdough...you have new friends for life.  Especially playdough with food coloring.  At the end of the day they all come and hug me.  It is really very sweet.  I'm probably the only 20 something that they know, so I really am quite incredible to them.  I think some of the little girls in our elementary wing (Grade 1-4) have little crushes on me.  I thought to make things interesting, I should give them pictures of me and write on the back, "you're my favorite".  That ought to spice up life.

The teacher I worked with told them that I would be leaving soon.  This girl just looked at me and said, "but....I love you."  So cute.  Then this boy spoke up and said, "well...when will he be leaving?"  My teacher said about a week before Christmas to which he responded and then looked at the class, "a week isn't THAT long to be gone".  Then the cloud lifted from my class and they were full of smiles again.  My teacher looked at me and said, "they don't get it".  I agreed.  They are in denial.

For my music class, I usually play my guitar and then I invite one student up to play with me on the shakers.  I ask them to name our band.  With the girls, I can almost guarantee that we'll be, "The horses" or "the happy dogs" or "I love horses".  With boys we are "the ninja's" which is a lot better then "the horses" if you ask me.  Funny.

But as nice a class as they are they will take each other to the grave if one of them isn't following the rules.  Both my teacher and I are trying to tackle "tattling" right now.  They are friends until one of them breaks a rule...then watch out.  As soon as it's dealt with, then they are best friends again.  It's like the most intense accountability group ever.

We decorated the class for Christmas after school today.  Talking trees (that will read the students books), and Santa's, and manger scenes, and Christmas banners, and snow flakes have taken over our lovely fall themed classroom.  The kids will probably lose it.  It's beautiful.

Andrew. I feel like you have given me a gift. Our relationship has moved to a whole new level.
Good luck with the little girls, and all their horses.

Play dough hey??  How did you know how to make all the different colors???  That seems like it would be a tricky job.  I used to love playing with play dough.  I ate some once.  Not actually as good as it looks actually . . . It sounds like you're having a pretty sweet IPT experience [is that what they call at UofL??  I never can tell what terms stay the same and what ones are different . . . Musicianship skills, aural skills . . . Reg-Ay-lia, Reg-Ah-lia . . . I get the funniest looks here when I ask what people will be singing in Performance class . . . "Don't you mean Repetory class??"  sigh.  Somedays I feel like a poor wayfaring stranger.  Well, I think that's all she wrote for today . . .

Oh, but I wouldn't feel too bad about the test Drew . . . I mean, you're still a far cry from tone deaf . . . and really . . . it's not like you need perfect pitch to play in the 'horse-rider song singers' anyways.  You'll always have the band . . .

This makes me miss teaching Grade 1. I ended up doing both of my practiculums in Grade 1 classes and LOVED it. I only wish I had a xanga then to recount all of the funny happenings. Kids are great!

We were told to take down all the pretty snowflakes the kids made to decorate our room with because apparantly its a fire hazard to tape paper to a wall. Its gonna break their hearts. I mean seriously people. They're children!

Good to hear you are well loved!

i think if i were in grade one, i'd call our band "the snow flakes."

sometimes i wonder if i should have taken Education...hmm... maybe i should volunteer at a school and see how it goes.  perhaps if directing the choir goes well i will re-think actually becoming a real conductor....in a school or something.  who knows.  or maybe i'll just get married not work at all (YES!!!) and make lots of babies (eek....)

hey....wanna start a band?  i have a great name in mind...

MA out.

That's awesome!  So how many kids have you scolded for eating the playdough?  There's usually at least one in every class you know.  If I were in grade one, I would call my band, "The Teddy Ruxpins".

I am having issues with this comment.  This is at least the 3rd time I've tried to post it.  Not sure why . . . If it doesn't work this time it's probably a sign that you should never know what I'm about to say . . .

First of all, I'm a little offended at the blatant "there's always one . . ." remark that was so obviously about me.  Yes, yes, I WAS the kid who ate play dough once.  Can we get over it maybe??  I think the taste of play dough should be punishment enough for this kid.  Scolding on top of that is really just adding insult to injury my friend . . .

But the real reason behind this 'double post', is because I just finished watching two very humorous videos on youtube and knew that you would find them quite amusing.  So I shall post the links here for your viewing pleasure.  That is all.

oh, except I talked with Adam and Jessica today.  We talked about you [what else is there really??  You are our common ground . . . Kind of beautiful when you think about it . . . Me, the lowly undergrad, him the towering grad student, coming together on common and equal ground to discuss you and your life.  Special.]

anyways, here's the links . . . "TAKE ANYTHING YOU WANT!"
